Title: Publication productivity and citation analysis of the medical journal of Malaysia: 2004 to 2008

Authors: Sanni Shamsudeen Ademola

Abstract: The very few studies that address the publication and citation practices among researchers in the medical fields in Malaysia motivated this study. This study adopted bibliometric methods to examine article productivity and citation analysis of the oldest medical journal in Malaysia, Medical Journal of Malaysia (MJM) from years 2004 to 2008 using data extracted from the Malaysian Abstracting and Indexing System (MyAis) database. A total of 580 papers were analyzed. The result indicates that MJM sustained consistent publication productivity with at least 100 to an average of 116 papers per year. A total of 2177 authors singly or jointly contributed articles and author‘s productivity pattern conforms slightly to Lokta’s law of author productivity. Most productive authors are senior medical researchers affiliated to higher institutions and foreign contribution was very small (6.20%), as most of the papers were contributed by Malaysians (88.96%). More than 90% of the papers were joint-authored with 3 authorship being the highest pattern of collaborative work. High degree of collaboration index of 0.9 was observed using Subramayam’s formula. Most collaboration were between institutions within Malaysia. Analysis of keywords indicated active contributions in topics such as diabetes, cancer, endoscopy, hypertension, and tuberculosis. Only 61 original research articles acknowledge funding, mainly from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovations as well as universities own research funds. The average number of references used per year is 1391 citations, while the average number of citation per article is 12. Most cited references are from scholarly journals (87.67%). The age of citations used were mainly about 1 to 11 years old (63.87%) with publications of over 20 years, still being referenced suggesting the longevity of the usefulness of works published in the medical field. Through Bradford’s law, analysis of journals cited indicated the proportion of number of journals in the three productive zones is 43: 210: 1270, in the ratio 1: 5: 25. The core journals revealed 22 titles. Citation to MJM articles were obtained from Google Scholar which revealed that 76.8% of all the articles have been cited at least once both by main stream as well as Malaysian journals and the citing authors came from seventy six different countries. MJM recorded its highest Impact Factor (IF) in year 2007 (0.616) followed by 2006 (0.456), 2009 (0.378) and 2008 (0.367), while the result of a five years IF is 0.577.

Title: The organization and access to digitized malay manuscripts: Creating a digital library using greenstone

Authors: Mohd Hilmi Md Rifin

Abstract: ABSTRACT
This study examines the current practice in accessing and organizing Malay manuscripts collection in selected Malaysian repositories and how to alleviate identified problems by developing a prototype digital library for Malay manuscripts. The soft systems approach or commonly referred to as the Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) is used to investigate the problem situation and apply system thinking techniques so that a suitable solution can be suggested and the following objectives can be realized: (a) To study the current practices in managing Malay manuscripts collections and issues related to Malay manuscripts as reported by manuscript librarians; (b) To determine the features and metadata for describing the digitized manuscripts to be incorporated in the proposed digital library of Malay manuscripts; (c) To implement a prototype digital library of Malay manuscripts using suitable open source digital library software, which could support the user requirements that have been identified; (d) To verify the usability of the prototype digital library of Malay manuscripts. This study adopts multiple data collection techniques that incorporate (a) survey questionnaire involving manuscript librarians in charge of Malay manuscripts collections; (b) review of digital library initiatives; and (c) user testing and evaluation of the digital library prototype. As a proposed solution to the problems faced in the current practice of managing Malay manuscripts, Greenstone, an open source digital library software and a metadata set based on Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) have been used for the implementation of a prototype digital library of Malay manuscript known as MyManuskrip. MyManuskrip provides a collaborative environment empowering a number of collections from independent repositories. Collection builders are able to better describe their Malay manuscripts through the use of TEI-based metadata, control the appearance of their own collection and categorize their manuscripts collections according to their preference, but still maintaining their ownership through the use of watermarking, while users are able to browse manuscript titles in categories, search single or across collections, view the complete manuscripts images and jump to other related materials through the provided hyperlink. Users' responses indicate that MyManuskrip is perceived as useful and usable. MyManuskrip is now available at http://mymanuskrip.fsktm.um.edu.my/

Title: Information marketing of free-based services in academic libraries in Sri Lanka

Authors: Block, Jayatissa

Abstract: The concept of marketing not only involves the buying and selling for financial gain, but also the achievement of organizational objectives successfully. Thus the term _marketing' has a wider and deeper sense, which proliferates the organization's successive achievements. Modern marketing is applied not only to profit making organization, but also to non-profit sector and social service organizations like library. Marketing in the library sector involves the performance of planning, organizing, dissemination and controlling of information services on a proactive and user oriented way that ensures user satisfaction while achieving the objectives of the parent organization.
The information service system in Sri Lanka incorporates mainly the various library system like a national library, academics libraries, special libraries, government libraries, public libraries, school libraries, corporate/business libraries, ecclesiastical libraries and other information centres. Parent organizations of the libraries spend a large amount of money for their library activities. However, due to various reasons, most of these libraries seem to be underutilized and have failed to satisfy the information needs of their users. One of the reasons is lack of marketing.
This study attempts to understand the present attitude of marketing in academic libraries in Sri Lanka. Here the basic marketing performance of academic libraries is examined using two questionnaires. Focus was on the investigation of the understanding of markets/potential markets, planning target services to accurate market segments, identification of competitive advantages, the application of marketing mixes (4Ps) etc. to libraries. It is also aimed at identifying the problems encountered in marketing of library and information services. Five academic libraries and 250 users responded with data.

Title: Academic usage of electronic journals focusing on EJUM (Electronic Journal of University of Malaya)

Authors: Abdul Rani Huzaimah

Abstract: Electronic Journal of University Malaya (EJUM), an internet- based journal-hosting system designed to publish scholarly journals was developed in 1996. It currently hosts three journals: Malaysian Journal of Computer Science (A1IGS), iticila, vsian Journal of Library and iqfbrination Science (MILLS) and journal of Problem- Based Learning (JPBL) with the main purpose to provide an avenue for scholarly journals to be hosted by a single system. This study investigates the level of acceptance and usage of EIUM and also to examine what users of EJUM perceive to be important in electronic journals.
A total of 300 hundred questionnaires were sent out to the registered users of EJUM and only 102 were used for analysis. The findings show that the respondents are predominantly academics from the field of computer science and most are lecturers without academic ranks within the age group of 31- 40. EJUM is mainly accessed for activities such as looking for new information and keyword search is the most commonly used searching strategy. The respondents rate EJUIvis functionalities as 'fair and most agreed that characteristics such as convenience of access, ease of use, ease of • downloading full text articles, availability of back issues and user friendly interface are important. Some of the most common problems faced by users of EJUM are downloading articles, searching and browsing for articles, viewing articles and printing articles.
On the average, a user access electronic journals at least one a week and they are more likely to read the articles in the PDF format.

Title: Knowledge management at National Library of Malaysia

Authors: Jamaliah Mohd Nayan

Abstract: The emergence of the new economy that is based on knowledge in the present era has definitely affected everyone and every organization including libraries. Knowledge is seen by most organizations as an overriding and important commodity and if managed properly can assist the organizations to improve their services and remain sustainable and significant in the near future. This study is carried out to assess the organizational working culture of the National Library of Malaysia as to whether it would support the efforts of managing knowledge in the organization. The explorative study using triangulation method consisting of interviews, observations and questionnaire were conducted to investigate the situation. Two hundred questionnaires on knowledge management issues were distributed to the staff of the organization and a total of 72% of it was duly filled and returned. Analysis of the data revealed that most of the respondents that participated in the survey are familiar with the concept of knowledge management and that the National Library has all the required tools and systems to manage knowledge in the organization. However it was anticipated to come up with a Knowledge Management System whereby persons with specific knowledge and expertise can be located easily and the organization should document the best practices and expertise it requires to successfully conduct the services offered to the library users. Therefore a conceptual framework called the l'NM Knowledge Bank is proposed in the final chapter hopping that it could act as the medium for knowledge capturing and dissemination in the organization.

Title: An exploratory study of upper secondary school students perception towards librarianship as a career

Authors: Ismail Norillah

Abstract: This study was carried out to explore the perceptions of upper secondary students towards librarianship as a career, concerning their level of awareness, the nature of the job and educational qualifications of a professional librarian. The study was also designed to find out factors that motivate or discourage students to choose librarianship as a career. The survey method, in the form of questionnaires modified from studies done by Genoni and Greeve (1997), Bloch and Bloch (1981) and Baruchson-Arbib and Mendelovitz (2004), were administered to randomly selected Form Five and Form Six students in twelve secondary schools in Petaling Jaya and Subang Jaya, Selangor. The response rate was 91.58%. The results of the findings reveal that the respondents had a very low level of awareness toward a career in librarianship. 49.84% were aware of a career in librarianship, but only 12% of the respondents would give a thought to be a librarian. 88.3% of the respondents were unaware of the existence of Public Higher Learning Institutions offering LIS programs. The respondents were also unaware of many job opportunities available in a broad range of places. They associated the place of employment with Higher Learning Institutions (78.0%), Schools (73.5%); and Museum and Archives (56.7%) only. "Check in and check out materials" and "Shelves and re-shelves books" were the two most recognized repetitive functions that were believed to be performed by a librarian. 64.9% underestimated the starting salary of librarian. A majority (83.1%) were also ignorant about the level of education demanded to work as a librarian. The librarians were rated the lowest among ten occupation included in the study. "Reading and love of books"(71.6°/0) and "Love interaction with public" (70.5%) remained the main reasons for being attracted to librarianship. "Other Career Chosen" (91.4%) and "Boring" (56.9%) were two perceived reasons of not considering librarianship as a career. The results of this study can be used by leaders in the profession and recruiters to develop strategies and help school leavers perceive librarianship in a more positive way. Expanding the informational sources about librarianship can facilitate the recruitment process. The future of this profession rests largely on the success of attracting better people into the profession, thus the profession should take into consideration the views of the generation of future professionals.

Title: Penggunaan Internet dalam pencarian maklumat di kalangan pelajar-pelajar indonesia di universiti Malaya

Authors: Marlini

Abstract: This study identifies the pattern of Internet use among Indonesian students at the University of Malaya. It focuses on the benefits of the Internet in searching for information usage, pattern and the frequency of students' use of the Internet for learning as well as the problems these students faced. The population of this study comprises of two hundred post-graduate (master and doctorate) students from various faculties. The qualitative methodology was used in the study and was done by distributing questionnaire. Indonesian postgraduate students are the main respondents. This study aims to determine Internet usage pattern amongst Indonesian postgraduate students. It has shown that students do gain benefits from the use of Internet for learning. The result shows 91% of the students have benefited from the usage of the Internet in learning and information searching. It is believed that most current and global information are the main factors that attract students to use the Internet. About 25% to 50% of the information from the Internet is used by the students for their learning. The frequency of Internet usage amongst the students is 2 to 4 hours a day. Based on the results of this study, it is indicated that 73.7% of the students are at master level, while 26.3% are PhD students. The study identifies some major problems among the Indonesian students in using the Internet such as "slow Internet connection" and "too much information". The respondents claim that it is difficult to find the information that is relevant to their subjects. It is therefore the responsibility of the university and the library to look into the problems and to provide alternative solutions on ways to provide faster Internet connection to the students.

Abstract: This study aimed to identify characteristic of materials used by postgraduates in computer science and software engineering programmes in University of Malaya to aid librarians in collection development to support research in these fields.
Forty six dissertations submitted for the degree of Master in Computer Science and Master of Software Engineering between 1999 to 2006, representing 20% of the total dissertation populations for the period were analyzed to determined use of information sources amongst postgraduate students in the disciplines.
A total of 2,746 citations were extracted from sample dissertations and tabulated according to authorship pattern, type of materials (books, e-book, journals, magazines, conference proceedings, book chapters, technical reports, thesis, government documents, web resources, computer programme, standards and others), language, age and domain name for web materials. Comparisons were made between the results and findings from previous citation analysis in computer science, science and engineering studies.
Overall monographs were most used by postgraduates in computer science and software engineering at 32.14%, followed by conference proceedings (17.1%) journals articles (17.02%) and web resources (16.9%) and magazines (8.02%). Multi-authored authored documents accounted for 51.35%. The age dispersion of citations used in computer science and software engineering spread over 63 years and the useful life of monograph , serials and web resources cited is about 6.69, 5.78 and 2 years respectively. The useful life is determined by counting the half-life of the documents. The preferred language of materials used was English.
Findings from characteristics of sources used by postgraduate researchers in computer science and software engineering can help librarians to make an informed decision in collection management in order to meet the information need of researchers in computer related fields.

Authors: Ruslina Ahmad

Abstract: Among the aims of inclusive education (1E) are to allow special education need (SEN) students to interact with their mainstream peers and to share available resources in the mainstream school. However there are many barriers to the provision of services for SEN students in mainstream schools. Providing a fair services to all students including SEN is one of the roles of school library (SL). The small study reported here investigated the provision of SL services for 1E in the mainstream school. It focused on the barriers faced by the teacher librarian in providing services for the SEN students and barriers encountered by SEN students and their teachers to use SL services. The study was set out to identify the current level of SL service provision and activities provided for SEN students; to identify the barriers to the provision of the SL services and programme for SEN students; and to understand the condition that can support the provision of inclusive SL services. The study took the form of a case study. Data was collected through interviews with the special education teachers and teacher librarians in two government primary school and two government secondary school in Selangor state and Kuala Lumpur. Data was complemented by the observations on the current level of SL services for SEN students. The research identified several barriers to the provision of inclusive SL including the environmental barriers, unintentional attitudinal barriers and resource barriers. To facilitate SEN students, special education teachers suggested that separate special areas which housed the appropriate learning materials including educational toys for SEN students be developed in SL. The study also showed that SL can include SEN students in SL programme by modifying the programme and cooperating with special education teachers.
Abstract: An analysis of the research publications in library and information science (US) in Malaysia is reported in this study. The aim of the study was to find out how LIS research is distributed over various topics, and the approaches and methods that have been used to investigate these topics. The study sample comprised 251 data items in the form of dissertations, theses, conference papers and journals articles (or their abstracts when full documents were not available) in library and information science published from 1961 until 2002. The data was analyzed to examine several variables, including the topic, approach, method, language, etc. used for the study. The data was classified based on the methodology and classification system designed by Jarvelin and Vakkari (1990). The findings indicate that the main group of topics researched was library and information science activities, with 21.5% of the publications. Researchers appeared to be less interested in scientific and professional communication (only 2.4%), and education in LIS (only 2.4%). Quantitative methods were a popular approach, being used in 31% of the research publications. The findings indicate the survey method was dominant in 43% of the publications examined, while the qualitative method was the least frequently used. It was also found that 54% of the research publications used descriptive statistics as the main method of data analysis. The questionnaire was the most frequently used instrument, being used by 18.7% of the studies. The main institution under study was 'others' being examined by 38.6% of the publications in this study. English was the predominant language of research publications and was used by 88% of the publications, with only 11.6% using Bahasa Melayu. In general, the findings found that LIS research is on the increase in Malaysia, although there is still room for improvement.
