|Abstract: ||The use of the Internet and wireless networks is growing everyday and fast handoff between different Access Points is becoming the main concern of having a smooth connection. Fast Mobile IP version 6 (FMIPv6) was proposed to decrease the handoff delay in the original Mobile IPv6, but still the delay is a lot, especially for the time sensitive or Real-Time applications. Also, if the FMIPv6 protocol cannot finish its procedure in time, it goes to the Reactive mode in which the delay is even longer than the Predictive mode.
Several researches have been done in order to minimize this delay, but none of them was fully successful. The main objective in this research was to decrease this delay as much as possible by eliminating and changing packets traveling between the Mobile Node and the Access Routers. Also the Duplicate Address Detection (DAD) procedure is eliminated, which is the most time consuming process. Although this method puts extra load on the routers, considering the improvement of CPU’s technology in recent years, this extra load can be connived. The proposed method eliminates the chance of handoff going to the Reactive mode. The Reactive mode is caused by the high speed of the Mobile Node or limited common signal area of the APs.
For the purpose of our research, we used the open source simulator called OMNeT++ as our testbed and to compare our proposed method with the FMIPv6 protocol. The results show that the delay is reduced considerably, and the Reactive mode is almost eliminated.
The proposed method has two main contributions: The first one is that the delay of FMIPv6 is reduced, and the second one is that the chance of running this protocol in Reactive mode is almost eliminated, which is the main reason of huge packet loss and high delay.|
