Abstract: SMS (Short Messaging Service) text messaging has pushed the mobile phone from an audio mode of communication to a visual mode as now messages are read not heard. This telecommunication breakthrough has important implications to a select group of people – the Deaf who can now use a mainstream communication tool despite their disability. This study seeks to find out how the Deaf community selected have adopted and adapted the conventions of SMS language as a mode of communication. The study highlights their SMS text messaging behaviour as well as the communicative themes and features prevalent in their SMS text messages. Data was collected through observations, discussions, questionnaire survey and record of authentic SMS text messages from 20 profoundly Deaf members from Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh. The participant and non participant observations, discussions and questionnaire were used to give insights into their SMS text messaging behaviour. The textual data which comprised 540 messages was analysed to find out the communicative themes and features of their SMS text messages. The findings show that the Deaf participants use SMS text messaging to communicate mainly with their Deaf friends, family and colleagues for both transactional and interactional purposes. The SMS messages were mainly of the informational-relational and practical-arrangement orientations. Their SMS text messages indicate that they have adopted a new genre of writing mirroring features of the conventional SMS discourse. SMS communication has become an integral part of their life and it has changed the way Deaf are communicating among themselves and with the hearing. The social independence afforded by it has empowered the Deaf to establish and maintain new relationships with those not physically present.
