Abstract: The study of: “The Mastery of The Concept of al-i‘la:l and al-ibda:l Among STAM Students”, aims at surveying the ability and understanding of students at secondary school in learning the topic of al-i‘la:l and al-ibda:l. The Ministry of Education Malaysia has designed a syllabus by which the topic of al al-i‘la:l and al-ibda:l to be one of the sub-topics of Arabic morphology which has been made compulsory for every STAM students to learn it. It is very important and necessary for every student who is sitting for STAM (Malaysian High Certificate of Religion) especially those who manage to pursue their study in Arabic field to understand or to have good command of this subject. Its importance can be seen when students are looking for meaning of a word in dictionary. This is because most of Arabic dictionaries need someone to have certain skills, for example he has to know the root word which will help him finding the correct meaning of the word needed. In this research the author has selected a group of STAM candidates to be sample of his study viewing that they are at the highest level of secondary education. Therefore, teaching and learning of this topic is thought to be suitable for them as they will enroll into any institutions of higher learning after this. This research studies about the changes occur in Arabic words which including the phenomena of dropping and replacing certain letters. It is also discussed in this dissertation the types of al-i‘la:l as well as al-ibda:l which are: al-i‘la:l bi al-hadhfi (dropping), al-i‘la:l bi al-naqli (shifting), al-i‘la:l bi al-qalbi (transformation), which occurs in different aspects. All data and information to show the competence of those students in dealing with this topic are obtained through a written test by the students. Here, the author has also been given a few suggestion and approaches for teachers as well as students and all parties involved in teaching on how to teach this topic. As a conclusion, this research will discover the level of students competence and understanding in learning the topic of al-i‘la:l and al-ibda:l. It is hoped that the findings benefit teachers and students as well as could be the guidelines for them in order to make teaching and learning this topic more effective and systematic. Kajian tentang “ Penguasaan al-I‘la:l dan al-Ibda:l Di Kalangan Pelajar-Pelajar Peringkat Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia ( STAM )” adalah bertujuan untuk meninjau kemampuan para pelajar mengikuti pembelajaran tersebut. Pihak Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia telah menggubal satu sukatan pelajaran untuk pelajar-pelajar STAM dengan menjadikan permasalahan al-i‘la:l dan al-ibda:l merupakan salah satu daripada topik yang perlu dipelajari. Ia dijadikan sukatan pelajaran untuk pelajar-pelajar tersebut dalam bahagian ilmu tatabahasa Arab. Keperluan untuk memahami dan menguasai proses al-i‘la:l dan al-ibda:l ini bermula sejak awal pembelajaran bahasa Arab ketika para pelajar menggunakan kamus dwibahasa dan sebagainya. Kebanyakan kamus yang digunakan memerlukan seseorang itu mengetahui kata dasar sesuatu perkataan. Penyelidik berminat untuk memilih bidang pembelajaran ini sebagai satu kajian yang dilakukan terhadap pelajar-pelajar STAM, kerana merasakan mereka telah berada di peringkat terakhir bagi alam persekolahan sebelum menjejak kaki ke Institusi Pengajian Tinggi. Oleh itu pembelajaran tentang topik in dirasakan wajar dan sesuai untuk mereka yang berada pada tahap tersebut. Kajian ini mengkaji tentang perubahan yang berlaku pada sesuatu perkataan yang melibatkan penggantian fonem yang sesuai dengan tujuan-tujuan yang tertentu. Penyelidik juga membincangkan pembahagian al-i‘la:l dan al-ibda:l serta kedudukan fonem yang digugurkan pada perkataan yang terlibat dengan proses tersebut. Bahagian-bahagian ali‘ la:l tersebut seperti al-i‘la:l bi al hadhfi, al-i‘la:l bi al-qalbi, dan al-i‘la:l bi al-naqli. Penguasaan tentang permasalahan yang berkaitan dengan al-i‘la:l dan al-ibda:l dapat dilihat melalui soal selidik yang dikemukakan kepada pelajar. Setelah mengenalpasti masalah yang dihadapi, penyelidik akan mengemukakan beberapa pendekatan dan saranan kepada para pelajar dan juga pihak-pihak yang terlibat dalam menjayakan proses pembelajaran ini. Kesimpulannya, kajian ini memaparkan kepada kita tahap pencapaian pelajar dalam menguasai pelajaran al-i‘la:l dan al-ibda:l melalui dapatan kajian yang dijalankan.
