Abstract: WLANs have emerged very fast in both public and private areas during the recent years. They provide a not trivial replacement for the complicated and high cost wired LANs. However, the access points (APs) that build these WLANs do not have a very long coverage range. Consequently, many handoffs may occur as the mobile station (STA) is moving while accessing the network resources located at the distribution system side. Unfortunately, these handoffs can disturb the real time applications if they consumed a long time (more than 50 ms). Consequently and to solve this problem, a new handoff mechanism for reducing the re-association delay in order to reduce the overall handoff latency is introduced in this thesis. This mechanism is called Advanced Context Distribution (ACD) and is able to reduce the delay of the re-association phase by eliminating the extra time consumed by the Inter Access Point Protocol (in order to transfer the context information of a STA from the old AP to the new associated AP). This elimination can be achieved by transferring the context information of a STA reactively from the old AP to the new AP prior to the re-association phase (during the discovery phase). The simulation results show that by using the ACD mechanism, the re-association delay can be reduced from an average of 27ms (in regular IEEE 802.11 handoff mechanism using conventional IAPP) to an average of 1.6ms (using ACD) which is an improvement of ~94% of the total re-association delay.
