Title: Code-switching in the teaching of science to lower secondary students

Abstract: This study was done at Pusat Tuisyen Jaguh Gemilang in Bandar Country Homes Rawang Selangor Darul Ehsan. The study examines code-switching utterances of two bilingual educators teaching form One and form Two science classes. The findings reveal that code-switching occurs in the teaching of the science subjects and it is a natural phenomenon in the Malaysian education system. The teachers tend to use English and the Malay language during teaching. It is noted that the bilingual educators frequently switched-codes at word, phrase, clause and sentence levels. The study also focuses on the frequency of code-switched utterances of the bilingual educators, reason for switching, the structure of the code-switched utterances and the factors affecting the educators’ choice of code. The study will also examine whether code-switching of the bilingual educators is a countenance of language interference. In the last chapter, the study will examine the Government’s policy of teaching science-based subjects in the English language and its effects if any on the national language-Malay language.
Kajian ini dilakukan ke atas dua guru dwi bahasa di Pusat Tuisyen Jaguh Gemilang di Bandar Country Homes Rawang Selangor Darul Ehsan dengan tujuan menganalisis penukaran kod dalam aktiviti pengajaran pendidikan mata pelajaran sains di peringkat tingkatan Satu dan Dua. Kajian ini menunjukkan bahawa penukaran kod dalam pengajaran mata pelajaran sains adalah satu fenomena semulajadi dalam pendidikan di Malaysia. Justeru itu, guru-guru mata pelajaran sains menggunakan dua bahasa iaitu Bahasa Inggeris dan Bahasa Melayu untuk mengajar. Didapati, guru-guru juga sering menukar kod pada peringkat kata, frasa, klausa dan ayat. Kajian ini juga membincangkan frekuensi penukaran kod oleh guru, faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan penukaran kod berlaku dan juga mengenal pasti sama ada penukaran kod ini memberi kesan implikasi terhadap bahasa kebangsaan kita iaitu Bahasa Melayu. Di bab terakhir, pengkaji mengenal pasti polisi kerajaan terhadap perlaksanaan pengajaran mata pelajaran sains dalam bahasa Inggeris dan kesannya terhadap bahasa kebangsaan-Bahasa Melayu.
