Abstract: This study examines the factors that influence Malaysian expatriate performance on global assignments. With the globalisation of the business world companies increasingly struggle with challenges of coordination, control and transfer of knowledge across units. As a result the use of expatriates has increased, and successfully managing expatriation has become an important operation in multinational companies. Considering the high costs of expatriates and the many challenges that foreign assignments entail, there is an obvious interest among practitioners and academics in identifying factors associated with expatriate job performance. This study has adopted the method used by J. Stewart Black (1987) in his study on ‘Work role transitions: A study of American expatriate managers in Japan’. The definitions and measurements of expatriate performance and the explanation on factors that influence expatriate performance and methodological approaches are discussed and suggestions for how to improve on empirical research in this area are presented. It also focuses on analysing research on the relationship between work-related and non-work related factors with expatriate performance. Drawing on previous studies, hypotheses on the relation between work-related and non-work related factors with expatriate performance are formulated and tested in the empirical part of this paper. The results and their implications in Malaysia context are discussed.
