Abstract: The Internet has grown dramatically since 1993 and serves as the backbone for the Information Age as the information and communication tool. It has also proven its educational values. The aim of this study is to understand how the schoolteachers who represent the core of the educational system respond to the Internet. A total of 450 questionnaires were distributed to 10 randomly selected schools in Alor Setar. From the total of 450 questionnaires, 325 schoolteachers responded and 32% of them were Internet users. The respondents are from various teaching and demographic backgrounds with some bias towards the Malays. Most of them had been exposed to computers and were quite inforrned on the importance and the capability of the Internet. However, the Internet users seemed more independent in their approach to usage and they saw computer more than just a work tool. Most of the Internet users in the study were light users, and their primary usage was for "News" with WWW and e-mail being the two most favourite functions. They were quite open to the Internet's unregulated environment, were very positive about its usage and were quite concerned about the issue of censorship. They also agreed that blockage was required for some materials on the Internet. Generally, the problems with usage among the schoolteachers centered on skills and time, and they saw training as being very crucial. The teachers' anticipated that 75% of their students used the Internet. The study also discussed what was needed to enhance Internet usage among schoolteachers, and recommended further studies on Internet usage to broaden our understanding on the issue, especially in the local context.
