Title: Enhancing handoff process using IAPP with caching techniques

Abstract: Wireless network has become very popular these days in all over the world, especially the IEEE 802.11 standard. As the users using the mobile devices are growing numerously and becoming more mobile, many access points (APs)are needed to cover a large area. When a station (STA) moves around within a wireless network it goes out of the range of one access point (AP) and comes to the range of another. This process is called handoff and it is one of the most important problems in wireless network as it affects the real-time and multimedia applications quality due to the handoff delay and packet loss during the process. This research proposes a method to enhance the handoff process using inter access point protocol (IAPP) to exchange neighboring information with caching techniques inside the access points (APs) and station (STA). This method was simulated using OMNeT++ simulator with INET framework and was able to eliminate the scanning delay that contributes most of the handoff delay. The simulation results show that the method improves the handoff process and was able to reduce the total handoff delay from an average of 414 ms (using the IEEE 802.11 standard handoff) to an average of 2 ms using the method which is an improvement of ~ 99%. Furthermore, the method reduces the packet loss during the handoff process from an average of 137 packets (using the standard IEEE 802.11 handoff) to an average of 2 packets using the method which is an improvement of ~97%. In addition, this method provides distributed dynamic neighbors caching that support the changes in network topology and overcome the centralized point failure problem.
