Abstract: This dissertation presents a proposed scheme which employs a steganographic technique to conceal the presence of a secret data in a cover-image without drawing the attention of unauthorised viewers. Currently, cryptography is a common way to protect the confidentiality of a secret data. In fact, encrypted data which appears as an unreadable string of data may arouse suspicion. Instead of protecting data the way encryption does, image steganography conceals a secret data into a common image as a camouflage. However, in the current image-based steganography technology, there are several problems arise due to i) distortion of stego-image produced after embedding a secret data ii) there is a restriction on embedding certain file types during selection of secret data and iii) limited capacity for embedding a secret data into the cover-image. Therefore, the primary objective of this dissertation is to develop a prototype which is able to embed a secret data into a bitmap cover-image as well as alleviate the aforementioned issues. In order to achieve the goal, image formats which are compatible for steganography usage as well as Least Significant Bit (LSB) substitution mechanism are studied and analysed. The proposed scheme is then analysed and evaluated in terms of accuracy, quality of the stego-image produced, capacity of secret data and types of data which can be embedded. For the proof of concept, an experimental test is performed to prove the proposed scheme is able to achieve the research objective. As a conclusion, the contribution of the proposed scheme is the Sequential Colour Cycle algorithm that enables the multi-layered embedding feature which allows a sender to encode layer by layer of secret data into cover-images as a stealth camouflage. Besides, the stego-image produced by using the Sequential Colour Cycle algorithm is able to strive above 30dB as its PSNR value. Moreover, the proposed scheme also contributes to the flexibility in the selection of any secret data file types as long as the size of secret data is approximately 50% of the cover-image size.
